3:30pm: I Am a Cuban Sandwich

Written and directed by Richard and Mary Ellen DiPietra, and performed by Richard, this play describes growing up in Ybor City in the 1950’s, illuminating the sights, smells and colorful characters that inspired him to write this love story to a small but complex town.

Taste of the Cuban Sandwich

Free admission, $ for food

Food fest featuring traditional Tampa cuisine, including an attempt to create the world's longest Cuban Sandwich, besting Miami's 30-foot long record set in December 2011, winners of the Cuban Sandwich Festival held in Ybor in May, and Cuban sandwiches from numerous local restaurants; plus roast pork, deviled crabs, empanadas, flan. Live music by Ray Viladonga and Dreamboat, and a special performance of I Am a Cuban Sandwich, a one-man performance by Richard DiPietra is scheduled.

BBQ Block Party and Chicken Parade and Rooster Promenade

Free admission, $ for food

Lots of BBQ and drinks, live music, and a costume parade open to everybody: children, dogs, pirates, hipsters, and, of course, fowl of all feathers. Bring costumes, do-da hats, wagon floats and umbrellas as we celebrate the life and alas, demise of James E. Rooster, a famous feathered citizen of Ybor City.

Walking Parade begins around 6:00pm at Al’s BBQ, goes through Gaspar’s Grotto and down 7th Avenue to the Dirty Shame, concluding with a visit to James E. Roosters grave and returning to Al’s BBQ. The Promenade is open to the public to join in and walk several blocks in a family-friendly restaurant tour, featuring roaming live chickens and a celebration of all things fowl. Wear sunscreen and comfy shoes. Beads and bras optional. Walkabout will take about 30-40 minutes.

Common Sense

West Tampa Center for the Arts presents, "Common Sense", an art event timed to coincide with the Republican National Convention in Tampa. The show features local artists, plus politically oriented work by New York artists Nora Ligorano and Marshall Reese.
