It's Here: June 2011!Cuban Sandwich Show
The Artists and Writers Group, Inc. is presenting a month-long series of cultural events about Tampa titled THE CUBAN SANDWICH SHOW, at numerous venues in Tampa, June 1-30, 201. The premise is that all the art, in all mediums, has as its subject, "Tampa…and/or Cuban sandwiches." Our motto: All Art-All Tampa-No Mayo.
The Artists and Writers Group is partnering with the Hillsborough Community College-Ybor City Campus and Ybor City Development Corporation to evolve this event into a cultural highlight of the summer season in Tampa Bay. Other sponsors contributing to this event include Grown Man Brand, NightCat Studios, GaryBurge.com, Silver Meteor Gallery, and Cigar City Magazine.
All the art must be exclusively about TAMPA and/or Cuban sandwiches (our chosen symbol of Tampa-slightly tongue-in-cheek). Thus, whatever the art form — visual arts, photography, video, dance, theater, music, cuisine, poetry, literature — the root subject is Tampa and its past, present and/or future. And for those of you who ask, yes, Ybor City is the heart of Tampa.
While artists will be predominantly from the Tampa Bay area, the event is open to anyone willing to share one's personal vision of Tampa. The work can be traditional, but the Group's tastes lean towards the whimsical, satirical, political, hysterical, silly, fun, surprising, deadly serious, wacky, and especially…new views and fresh perspectives of our fair city.
Current participants are (among others and subject to change): Arts Council of Hillsborough County Advisory Committee, Bamboozle Café, Blue Bird Books, Café Hey, Community Stepping Stones, Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, Gram's Place, Grown Man Brand Studios, Hillsborough Community College-Ybor Art Gallery, Joffrey's Coffee and Tea Company, Tampa Regional Artists at Old Hyde Park Art Center, King Corona Cigar Cafe, La France, MacDonald Training Center, Michelle Faedo's On the Go, The Pyramid, Silver Meteor Gallery, Tre Amici at the Bunker, Ybor Art Association, Ybor City Saturday Market.
The Cuban Sandwich Show is an expanded version of a very popular annual arts exhibition conceived by Gordon and Denise Mhyre that originated in Ybor City in 1991 and continued in Seminole Heights for a number of years. The 2011 Cuban Sandwich Show will mark the twentieth year anniversary and is a major expansion of the event.
